The people behind Chromara

We’ve been on
both sides of
the beauty counter.

we met on the retail floor at Sephora. after years of helping people search for a foundation match, we started building a way to make it for them.

01 / What we saw

A return was
rarely just
a returned bottle.

someone would come in looking for foundation, leave with the closest shade, then come back to try again. across thousands of customer interactions, we saw how often finding a match meant settling for something that still wasn’t right.

we also handled returned, damaged, and barely used products that could no longer be sold. behind each one was money spent, product discarded, and often a customer wondering whether foundation would ever work for them.

we wanted to change what happened before that purchase. instead of asking someone to keep searching a shelf, we began designing a system that could mix foundation around their skin and preferences.

From Faith and Lydia’s experience working in beauty retail.

2020

we met working at Sephora in St. Louis.

2025

we began designing the NovaMirror and founded Chromara.

Today

we’re developing the technology to make foundation on demand.

From the counter to the technology

Foundation made
for the individual.

the NovaMirror is being developed to use a facial scan and your selected coverage and finish to create a custom formula. refillable pigment pods supply the mixing system, so your next formula can be different from your last.

02 / Designing for reuse

The refill matters.
So does the system.

seeing usable product discarded made waste part of the problem we wanted to address. we’re designing the NovaMirror around refillable pigment pods and on-demand mixing.

research from the Sustainable Packaging Initiative for CosmEtics (SPICE) shows that the environmental performance of reusable cosmetics packaging depends on factors including material weight, transport, and the number of times it is reused.

that research informs the questions we need to ask. it does not establish an environmental benefit for the NovaMirror.
